  • History of Skiboarding Videos

For awhile now I've been wanting to digitize the old skiboarding VHS tapes. Well that time is now. The first one is done and of course it's SB1. I remember seeing this video when it came out, in 1997, and was blown away by what they were doing. These tricks had never been done on skis before, truly revolutionary. This is the video that got me into skiboarding. It was playing in New World Sports, in San Francisco, CA, (shout out to Jon Hoag) when I rented my first pair - Sporten Massos. The next weekend I rented Line "Suns" and headed back to Squaw Valley. I broke one of the boards on the 2nd day but I was hooked.

    SB1 - October 1997

    TPKD - September 1999

    SB2 - September 2000

    MMVM - January 2001
    Link to MMVM (magazine)

    SB3 - October 2001

    Trix & Tips - September 2001

    ESB: Sickness & Health - October 2001

    720 Skiboarding - October 2002

    White Dwarf - August 2004

Thanks so much G, for getting this preserved in digital form. 24 years is a long time. This sport does have a history .It exploded on the scene in a big way and then got eclipsed by twin tip skiing and kind of forgotten especially by skiers and snowboarders and many have not remembered that this was not just snowblades but was a serious sport in the X games with guys going big and sending big air and free riding in difficult terrain and all. Thanks for all you have done to keep the original dream alive and with new designs moving the sport forward into the future!.

Thank you Jack. Yes, people don't know or remember, these guys were doing all of this years before it was done on skis. I remember a year or so after this video Johnny Mosely did a single "Iron Cross 360" (tweaked mute 360) and everyone lost their minds.

Heh, I've still got the CD for the soundtrack of that one in my truck. Waaaay too much rap-rock, but there's a few good tracks on it. Still have the VHS somewhere, I'm sure. Thanks for digitizing it!

I got into skiboarding because skiing was stagnant and I wasn't cut out for a snowboarder - hate having my feet stuck together. It was an article in Freeze magazine that first got me interested, and after trying a pair of Dynastar Twins on a demo day, I never went back. Got a pair of Canons after my first full snowboarding season.

Skiing used to be a dad sport and the cool kids all snowboarded, but now a snowboard is something your dad rides and the cool kids are on skis. Since my sister had kids, I say skiboarding is something your weird uncle does .

I still skiboard because they still slay skis on damn near everything, and snowboards on everything except the deepest powder days.

I just went through the timeline and realized TPKD came right after SB1. I've added it above.

I Just added, to the Skiboarding History playlist, the last major skiboarding VHS movie ever released. SICKNESS & HEALTH: BIOHAZARDS represents the shift from the original group of skiboarders showcased in Boomer's Frontside SB files to the 2nd generation of skiboarders represented by
                      Adam Lynam
                      ,
                      Joey Ciprari
                      ,
                      Adam Newhard
                      ,
                      Ben Wannamaker
and more. Enjoy this look back to the early 2000s.
