It gave us something to do while we were Walking.

( I obviously spent more time at the skating rink then I did at school, but it was a 5 mile Walk too.)

Everything in my life has always been about getting better, and if I'm not the best or can't become the best, I would quit. I found this sport, and nobody felt that way, a few people wanted to be really good but nobody ever really talked about who was the best. Even among "pros" they'd share the glory, they'd give credit to the other riders, hell they'd give legitimate credit to the new riders just for giving it a go. But what scares me is that I see a growing gap between the members of the skiboard community and the "pros". And I don't put the word 'pros' in quotes to be insulting I'm just doing it. To me the sport has always been about community and talk of progression just seems to drive a wedge between those that are just out for fun and those who are out to be competitive. I'm sure the competitors are having fun but it doesn't look like it sometimes, and I know progression becomes irritating at times first hand, working two years at a ski resort and constantly taking classes on how to improve my technical skiing and teaching skills. I'm in it for the community, if the community falls apart or starts being something I don't like, I will completely drop out of it; I'll still ride and buy R8 but I won't be a part of a community I no longer have interest in. I just don't want to see the skiboard mentality die; and to me the skiboard mentality is like 90% of the reason I ride.

No offense meant if it came off that way, just my view.

I was liking how that started, but then it went in a pessimistic direction. Most of us on here are always trying to get better. That is why we share our experiences, take advice, give advice, celebrate joyous experiences, etc… I don't think anyone ever says, "I just want to stay the same." Just because they don't say in the exact words that they would like to get better doesn't mean they don't intend on making some sort of progress in any way, especially those who ride park. Remember, the name of this section is Freestyle Skiboarding, and not just skiboarding in general.

I don't think anyone takes it as insulting. I am under the assumption that by "pros" you mean those on a team, be it a Revel8 Team, an AllZ team, or any other sponsored rider. In that, I am not sure if you refer to "gap" as the ability level, or a disconnect. As far as an ability level gap, well that pretty much is one of the defining factors of being sponsored. I don't want to go down an entire list of factors because part of being sponsored or getting equipment flowed to someone has to do with ability, brand representation, and many other pieces to the puzzle. If you mean disconnect, I also don't see that as a factor. Many people comment on the progressive threads in all areas; park, BC, urban, or anything else that goes up. Sure, there will be some sort of disconnect. But, not in the way of leaving people out intentionally. But, more so in the way that while a groomer rider may not be able to connect to a thread on the freestyle section is in the same way that many freestyle riders do not find a way to connect on the Rockered Condor threads or anything else in a realm of skiboarding some people just don't participate in.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I have only been active on here for two years (in two weeks will be my two year anniversary for skiboarding), but I have looked at many older posts and there has always been lots of talk about progression all the way from threads explaining how to do tricks up to the videos and discussion on bigger, better, and newer tricks. I don't see it as a wedge, but more a push for people who thrive to get better. If people didn't push to get better in some way there would never be growth for the sport. If there is no growth then the sport will fade away. Companies can't survive on just the existing population alone if people start to drop off. In the end, without progression skiboarding would cease to exist.

Sorry if it doesn't look it, but we are having a blast. You need to come ride with us more to see that. We have been playing games of skate, laughing when each other fall, making fun of each other constantly, and sometimes you can catch a hug (or Dave Lynam trying to kiss Brandon Enouf).

Not everyone can be Dave Lynam in the air, Kirk Thompson on the rails, Jack in the Backcountry, Brett Connor on the pow, and/or Greco in the marketplace. There is only one Wayne Gretzky, one Michael Jordan, one Babe Ruth, and so on. Getting better doesn't mean having to be the best or quitting. It simply means getting better. If you end up being the best, awesome. If not, it doesn't mean quitting. Sure, it is totally frustrating trying to get a trick and not being able to do it. That's life. And, that sort of thing even happens to guys like Dave Lynam. I watched him try to learn a dub cork 9 with twelve tries in a row and never getting it to feet. Does that mean he gave up? For that day, yes. But, progress and getting better simply means trying, even when the outcome is not what you wanted. If everyone could learn everything simply with practice then we would all be amazing. But, that is not the case. Fun is fun, regardless of how you do it. I don't think other people getting better should be a factor that makes it less fun for others. If so, then maybe you are confusing fun with being the best.

The community thinking and skiboard mentality hasn't changed. Only the amount of people in it have. I mean, there are more threads now about simply how to ride a new board in different ways (the definition of progression) then ever before. I think you may be suffering from what many people are suffering from that are having a disconnect right now. Your season is not really in existence this late in the season, you are not exactly where you would have hoped at this point, and other reasons that cause a funk. We have all been there at one point or another. Just remember, progressing can be fun as long as you don't put the pressure to either do it the best or just quit. Remember, fun is laughing. Even if the smile isn't there, as long as it shows on the inside.

P.S. No offense taken for any of your comments and critiques. The forum is here so everyone can speak freely. The internet is democratic, so we all get to speak our mind. No government here to shut you down. Greco is like a socialist dictator that just lets things flow and happen.

Dennis, I think I see what you're sayin. I don't think that progression should be forced by someone else. Progression should be done because that person or persons as a whole want to progress. If some one told me I had to learn something new, and gave me some kind of ultimatum, I would be pissed. The tricks (most of them anyway) that I have learned up to this day have been practiced because I wanted to learn them for myself. The day people start telling me I have to do something is the day that I start to fade away. I'm here for the community, and because I love what I do.

Dave, I agree. But, I don't see where that thought came from being that nowhere on here is progression for anyone being forced.
