  • Summer Projects

For the first time in several season of skiboarding.........I don't have any summer projects. In the past I have always kept busing either fabricating bindings and risers, or customizing my skiboards. There has always been something to work on in the off season, but I seem to have found my ideal set up with the Ickys and my my custom risers. It's nice to look forwards to next season with the confidence of knowing my gear is ready to go, but I do feel a little lost without something to tinker with.

So, does anyone have any skiboard projects they are working on? I know you backcountry guys are always working on the next great touring binding....
    Just these, nothing else !

No skiboard projects this summer. Currently, it's all about the bike and making carbon fibre handlebars.
I did finally weaken and buy a ski helmet for next season though. Whether I use it or not remains to be seen.

I never used to use a helmet, but started wearing one a few years a go to set an example for my kids. Despite trying several models, I have yet to fins a helmet that is compatible with my goggle and face mask. The main issue seems to be getting the right amount of airflow to prevent overheating and fogging. I used the Crasche Hat last season and found it to be an excellent solution. It doesn't give as much protection as a helmet, but is a satisfactory compromise.

I did spend a load of time ensuring the helmet/goggles combo was a good fit, but yes, being too warm is likely an issue. The helmet has an adjustable vent system so I am a bit hopeful. The Crasche Hat solution is interesting though.

            +1 on the Crasche hat

I followed B-Wolf's lead and purchased 2 hats: 1 w/full protection and 1 w/partial protection (crown of head unprotected). The full protection still gets warm as temps get up, but is not an issue in the cooler/cold temps. I'll probably get another set of partial protective inserts for the second hat. If I think I need full protection (i.e. riding in tight trees, etc), I'll just wear my helmet. The fellow I corresponded with from Crasche was great.

              Summer Skiboarding Projects ......

              1) Still working on trying purchase a 'Mountain House'. The purchase process is driving me nuts.

              2) Trying out some skiboard graphics updates. I have been messing around with updating/changing the topsheet graphics of some boards. I'll post some pics if it works out.

              3) Kid skis purchases. I typically update my kids' skis during the summer to take advantage of off season clearances. This year for my youngest I went a different route and supported a start-up Jr ski. If all goes well my daughter will be rocking a pair of Coalition Poppy Skis. Coalition is a ski company for women by women making some cool stuff.

              Helmet commentary ....

I love my helmet of choice. My Smith Vantage helmet is not just great protection it is arguably the best hat I own. It's very comfortable, light, vented to adjust to warmest and coldest days, keeps my goggles from getting away from me with a google retainer, keeps my goggles fog free by venting air through them, and has full stereo sound ... what's not to love??

My little summer project started like this.

The end is starting to look like I imagined it

Great minds think alike? The key to happiness with Smith Helmets is pairing them with Smith Goggles. They fit together to eliminate the dreaded "goggle gap" and the Vantage brim will actually force air over and through the goggle to reduce fogging.

Very cool! I've been wanting to do a rack that works with the bindings still on the boards but I've been too busy (or lazy) to work out the design details. For now my skiboards live in a makeshift rack in my basement that is a lot less pretty than yours.

I think it would just be giving more room in between the slots. I think I have about 3" in this set up. The space is 1-¼ " and cut at 30 degrees. Maybe 5" or 6" for a release binding would work .

I might have a few more ideas to decorate it up a little ..

I resisted helmets for a long time until I found the one I have now, which I like and find myself using all the time now by default. Never paid attention before but sure enough, it's this same Smith helmet with the brim that y'all have.

The most impressive helmet I've ever seen was worn by a guy at our local resort. This guy was wearing a classic, old-style lightweight CCM hockey helmet, paired with worn-in Carhartt brown duck outerwear. I figured he was a hockey player but no, he found the helmet in with some junk he was cleaning out, didn't know any better and figured it was a ski helmet. This fellow was an interesting character and obviously no slave to fashion. I asked Carolyn if I could dress like that when we went skiing but she said no.

Tom's skiboard rack is dandy. I need something like that for my fishing rods, which are in serious disorder.
