  • Bluewing , thanks for the vids of your daughter, she is looking like she is having a whale of fun on the Blunts ... maybe you will need to get two pair one for yourself and another for her !

Meanwhile ... I had a great day today at Heavenly with my buddy Jeff ( Sherpa guy) and my wife Liz and Jeff's daughter ...
Here is a pic of Jeff and I ...

Everyone had went home after the Thanksgiving holiday .. Heavenly has been making snow like crazy and has two long runs on the Nevada side open ( Orion and Dipper ) as well as one run on the California side ... defintely the nicest condition and most terrain of any area in Tahoe right now ... super fun on a Blue bird day .... I was on the Blunts with the new SBOL modified Sims Cipher snowboard binding ... this is one hell of a great set up and absolutely a ton of fun ... I think my RC's are in dry dock until we get real pow !

ps ... I don't understand all this talk about edge hold .. who needs edge hold I LOVE to slide on ice ... there were a few icy patches for me to test on the steeper runs and the secret is that the Blunt is a superb controlled slider on the icy stuff as well as a superb carver if there is any kind of softness in the snow ... and stability in chop at speed , amazing ! if I can feel firm snow underfoot .. I will be on the Blunts for sure !

I can't really say anything about the Blunts that hasn't already been said. Bluewing and his daughter have it pretty much covered, especially about the amount of glide these boards have. I'd be gliding down the flat part of a run where the Mrs. would have to skate like crazy to get anywhere. She was getting very frustrated with me. It was her first time riding the Summit Jades, and she was not all that impressed. She says she gives them a 7 out of 10 for overall performance.

I must say that I don't find the Blunts to be anything like the RCs. The rocker is so slight that it is hardly noticeable. They definitely have better fore/aft stability than the RCs. I was pleased with the amount of hold they had on ice. It was better than a lot of boards I've been on. They are definitely fast if you let them be. They're incredibly light and easy to skate. So far, so good. I plan to ride the Blunts as much as possible this season.

Smooth is what Cindy and I said watching you. At the beginning you skated like you've had them on for years. Looks like theres another one in the Blunt Club.

(I have never ridden the RC's, so keep that in mind) I am not sure if it is the "rockeredness" but I am occasionally loosing some balance, and catching myself slipping backwards. I first attributed that to the rocker, but I feel like I am wrong. I did not feel as stable, but I will ride a few more days before a final determination. I do enjoy them! Don't get me wrong!!! I just need to get used to the length and rocker, still different then the stiff Line 96's.

My original question to Valmorel regarding edge grip was just to this point. On ice I can get a nice controlled slide with my 120s but not with my 125s. The 125s just seem locked in all the time but that's not my riding style. Given the 125s are the only rockered board I have tried it's my frame of reference for the Blunts. Initial reports of amazing edge hold and carving with the Blunts turned me off but as more guys get out on them they seem to be a do everything board and I am definitely curious about them. I don't know if they are in the budget this season so my first thing will be to adjust the tune on the 125s while I budget for the Blunts.

This is based on very limited time on the Blunts but I did find I could get them to bite really hard when I wanted to and also get them to drift when I wanted. My riding style is definitely based on being able to get a soft edge when I want to so that is a very important characteristic of any board I am going to be riding a lot. I plan on taking the Blunts to Elk Mountain on Dec 8th for their opening weekend so they should be a good full day workout then. Elk is looking like they are going to have a good opening with a decent amount of terrain open, including a very long green that realy skis like a blue and a few steeper black runs.

My daughter is definitely not a hard charging carver and she was drifiting the Blunts all over the place. Now, keep in mind this was on soft snow conditions.

I experienced the same thing a few times when I rode the Blunts at Blue Mountain. Partially I think it was me figuring out the balance points and how much tail support they would provide. I also think it was partially because I am trying to match my movements with the speed of the boards. A few of the times when I felt myself slipping backwards I think it was actually because my body was not "keeping up with the boards" and they were too far from my center of gravity in the arc of a turn. Most likely due to not enough angulation and too much lean. I never came close to falling because of it though. One way, and believe me it is the only way, these reminded me of the Head 94s is that I could get away with things I likely could not get away with on longer boards - like losing my balance rearward and recovering it without any drama.

I have to admit to experiencing this also. I compensated by going more gorilla and leaning forward a bit. I plan to adjust my Receptors a notch forward to see if that makes a difference next time out.

                        • Some of this might be due to the fact that the boards are so damn short we can't see the tips in our lower peripheral vision. This would be problematic on say a 120 so we kind of move back on the boards to bring those tips into view. I was corresponding with Jjue earlier to the effect that the boards kind of disappear, almost to the point of not feeling like I have any skis on at all. This is just pure magic for me but I also understand that a reference point might be lost for some. It then becomes a question of trusting...... never easy

The observation re the Blunts being so short they don't appear in lower peripheral vision is really insightful. I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense. The bit about them disappearing underfoot and not feeling like you have skis on at all is very true for me - I think it will be a matter of building up enough feedback and "reference" data on them so my mind then knows where the boards are, where my body needs to be and what balance adjustments to make. Should be a fun experiment.
