  • Shredfest 2024 Weather Report

Starting with Clear Skies on Friday 2-23 and clouds on the weekend --it looks like good driving into South Lake Tahoe on all roads.

Snow is expected on Monday and maybe into Tuesday - then clear skies thru the week. Temps from 20s to low 40s.

Not the 13 hour journey from LA to Tahoe in the monster storm last year!!

Checking Web Cams at Kirkwood --they installed new ones that are better -after a 3 day black-out!! the K site says Kirkwood is Prime!!
All roads are open 88 to 89 and 50 and 80. Weather looks in our favor - -expect after the storms packed and groomed surfaces -- not the deep powder of 2023.
My newly installed Epic App says all chairs running at both K and Heavenly. So the backside is Open. K temps ranging 23-38 thru next Thursday.

Friday March 1 - - All chairs closed at Kirkwood - -with the note --Storm of the Season --check out the webcams if you want to see what a Blizzard looks like.

I left on leap day at 9 am with wet roads but easy down 50 to Sac Town.
Currently, all roads in chain control and road cams on 50 and 80 show lots of snow on roads - -When will they put cams on 88 and 89??

The pros made it down to Reno early this morning for flights out. We had a blast - -could have had better conditions at Heavenly on Monday when only 2 1/2 chairs were open in high winds and icy snow making Gunbarrel hard to get an edge --that didn't bother videos in the park!!

Tuesday was epic at Kirkwood - -showed its best side with excellent edge hold and some more super videos of flips off the cornice on the backside chair 4. -I made some fine turns off the Wall at 74 on my 2011 RVL8 KTPs!! with my Head Speed Disc Soft Boot set up. The trees had super edge hold with no ice.

I know why the pros love the parks and halfpipe at Northstar! We had a blast and saw Rickylink at the ice rink.
They are developing the next gen pros as I saw a 6 year old snowboarder in the park!!
Tired on my 4th skiboard day - I switched the bindings to my 2018 Rockered Condors -- slarving a half day on the groomed stuff while chasing the pros thru the park.

I heard from my mono ski buddy who just retired and moved to Salt Lake that Park City is also closed today in high winds and blowing snow..

Meanwhile down here in SoCal, Mtn High is in full sun with lots of snow and the park is open until 10 tonight!!! This storm will track to Mammoth and east with only 6-8 inches expected this far south.
Weather can mess up your best plans --as I was driving home on a nice Hwy 50, lots of rich folks from Silly Valley (rich from NVDA, AMD MSFT etc) were driving up in their TSLAs and Range Rovers immune to the National Weather Service calls for a Blizzard and stay in place recommendations - -some will be stuck in Tahoe or KW and some won't get their batteries charged - -but they can sit in the casinos or their condos and say they are working remotely!!

Just checked the mountain cams and info at Sierra at Tahoe on Hwy 50 - -they closed Thursday at noon, closed Friday and working 24 hr teams with "Winds have made visibility the biggest challenge, with senior patrollers getting disoriented on trails that they know like the back of their hand." Over 20 inches since I drove by at 9 am on Leap Day. They hope to open by noon Saturday but say to stay hunkered down until they give the all clear.

Dodge Ridge east of Fresno is closed Saturday. The lawyers must have written this -- "The safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. We appreciate your understanding in this matter."

China Peak east of Visalia a bit South of Fresno says, "several feet expected, plus very high winds which we almost never see at China Peak. This, along with the very challenging travel conditions on Highway 168 with heavy snow and limited visibility forces us to make the right call and close for Saturday only." The summit webcam is blowing snow bits but the cam is not frozen over like Kirkwood - -very cool in the dark.

Mtn High near Palmdale has no snow - -open til 10pm PDT and there is a small crowd, mostly snowboarders for the park - no chain controls yet but snow expected later tonight.

All of the Tahoe webcams are impressive, even downtown SLT looks like a foot fell overnight.

I looked earlier at Kirkwood webcams and lift status - -the front side chairs are spinning for a small crowd - -and also checked the cal trans site - -88 closed between Carson Spur and Peddlar Hill - -that means you are locked down at the Wood. Enjoy the skiboarding -first tracks for those stuck at Kirkwood. They opened it last year West at 5pm and we were the 2nd car on the road..

Reports are that some places in California got 7 feet in 5 days.

Meanwhile, in the Midwest all the ski hills have closed. Even Mount Bohemia on Lake Superior has shut down. Their website says they may open if another snow storm comes through. Most of them only had about a 6 or 7 week long season.

Well, maybe not ALL of the midwest ski hills. I was at Granite peak this past weekend and they've still got a pretty good base to work with. And I'll probably hit Little Switzerland this coming weekend one last time before their season ends.
Sticky Icky Ickys (I think I'm in love )
Spruce 120's (they served me well)

That's encouraging. I only checked Hidden Valley, Chestnut, Devils Head, Cascade and Mt Bohemia. No telling what those Western storms are going to bring us.
