Well, the "greatest guitarist of all time" is probably some jazz or classical guitarist I never heard of, so I'll just list my five favorites in whatever order they occur to me. This list will likely give away my taste in music.

      1) Doc Watson
      2) Tony Rice
      3) Merle Travis
      4) Norman Blake
      5) Charles Sawtelle

      Who's on your list, Dave? I know you're a picker, yourself ;-)

Poor old Richie Blackmore gets left of all the lists, and no one has made more heads bang than Angus Young.
        Just these, nothing else !

          In no particular order:

          Chet Atkins
          Steve Vai
          Les Paul
          Martin Taylor
          Frank Zappa
          Tommy Emmanuel
          Andres Segovia
          Jeff Beck
          Christopher Parkening
          Django Reinhardt

Too hard to rank because the styles are soooo different amongst most of these guys ... and what makes them each incredible musicians is also unique.

This guy will most definitely make the list some day:

Skis: Armada JJs, Armada Magic Js and Icelantic Keepers
          Bindings: Marker Griffon, Look Pivot
          Full Tilt Boots
Past: Revel8 Tanshos, KTPs, Revolts, DLPs, Condors; Spruce Raptors, 120s, Sherpas

            1. Angus Young - lead guitarist for AC/DC - because he has only played 3 chords since the Back in Black album released in 1980 but he plays them all enthusiastically; plus the shorts and the spastic stage presence are classic

            2. Randy Rhoads - for "Crazy Train" alone

            3. Bruce Cockburn

            4. Eddie Van Halen

            5. The Edge
In pursuit of Peace, Harmony and Flow.....
            Think Like a Mountain

Boards ridden, some owned: Sherpas, Spruce 120 "STS", Blunts, DS110 custom prototypes, Rockered Condors, Revolts, DLPs, Summit Custom 110s, Summit Marauders, Head 94s, Raptor prototypes, Osprey prototypes.

When thinking about lists like these, I find it hard to separate individual musicians from the groups they were part of. Is it David Gilmore I like, or is it the sound that Pink Floyd make as a group and the amazing writing of Roger Walters? I love Gilmore's long, winding, haunting solos, they just drip with dark emotions, but without the framework of Walter's masterful composing.......
                Just these, nothing else !

I agree with bad wolf... Although I find myself listening to ummagumma quite often as well as Syd Barrett's creativity shines through on there. Have you ever heard another song that has kazoo's?

                  Careful with that axe Eugene;-)

I love Knopfler as an artist ... have several of his albums, but personally I wouldn't put him in the "elite" guitarist category.

                        Now, for songcraft/artistry ... absolutely.

And I think Stevie Ray Vaughan is number 6.
