  • Skiboard Connection 2020 - Colorado

We're planning the third annual meet in Colorado - The Skiboard Connection! You can also check this event out on Facebook.

Here's one of the awesome days we had last year. Check out all of the videos from last year to get an idea of the type of terrain we tend to look for.

We'll be riding mid-week to avoid the crowds. This is the perfect event for those looking to put their Epic Pass to use!

    Riding dates and resorts
Monday, February 3 - Copper (Ikon)
Tuesday, February 4 - Vail (Epic)
Wednesday, February 5 - Breckenridge (Epic)
Thursday, February 6 - Vail (Epic)
Friday, February 7 - Keystone (Epic)

    Passes and lift tickets
If you don't have an Epic pass, your best option at this point is likely the Vail 4-pack which gives you the flexibility of choosing any 4 Vail-owned resorts. This means we can switch up the schedule as needed to go where the best snow is falling.

    Lodging options
The home base for this meet is the Silverthorne / Dillon area. This provides quick access to the highway, restaurants and shopping.

In previous years we've been able to find hotels for around $95 / night, but once snow starts falling those prices tend to go up pretty quickly.

    Travel and transportation
I haven't figured out my travel details yet, but will update this post when I do. I'm probably going to try to fly in this year, so let me know if you plan to come and would like to car pool up the mountain from the airport and share a rental car.

    Roll call
If you're interested in joining us, let us know! Feel free to join us for all or some of the days - whatever works best for your schedule.

    Definitely!
    Courtney

I'm flying in on Monday, Feb 3 so I'll have to skip the first day of riding.

Grrr... that work thing is going to get in the way of hitting up Skiboard Connection this year. Looks like I'm only going to be able to do Shredfest.... Still trying to see if I can squeeze in some of Westfest.

Enjoy those steep trees in Colorado kids! You won't have anyone like me to complain the whole way

My family was in CO all last week, predominantly skiing Vail and Beaver Creek. We tried to shift to align with the meet-up but we couldn’t change our plans. Regardless here’s a little recon from the ground for anyone heading out to CO.

If arriving in Denver Sat/Sun be prepared for very warm weather it may actually get up to 70 degrees on Sunday before a weather system comes through Monday that will drop some snow and the temps. With the expected evening snow coming Monday you’ll likely need an AWD/4WD if renting a car to travel out I-70 to the resorts on Monday. If driving out Sat/Sun I-70 should be a breeze.

Resort conditions are pretty good. We skied Breck, Vail, and Beaver Creek. All three had great coverage and were mostly fully open. Breck got a 15” storm about 10 days ago and Vail and the Beav have been getting small 2-4” storms all this week. There were some small powder stashes to be found in the trees but no major powder dumps. Hopefully this storm coming through a Monday will set you guys up nicely for the week.

Wish I could join you guys, it was a bit lonely being the only skiboarder in sight during 6 days on the snow. I got tired of answering the “what are those?” question and the weird looks from the Vail ski snobs. Have fun!

                          Skiboard Connection 2020 Event Recap

I flew in on Monday, so I missed the Copper day which didn’t work out for much of the group for various reasons.

Tuesday at Vail: We had a great start with 7” of fresh powder. Most of our day was spent in the trees off Blue Sky Basin. We rode 25,625 vertical feet, resulting in 25.4 miles skied. Top speed: 44 mph. No lift lines.

The Legendary Back Bowls at Vail

Wednesday at Breckenridge: We had about 1” of fresh powder over night, with about 5” the previous day. We were still finding some decently deep snow in the tight trees where others didn’t dare venture. Despite the super cold temperatures and below zero wind chills, we made 22 runs in 6 hours with most of that time spent in the trees. We rode 31,492 vertical feet, resulting in 31.1 miles skied. Top speed: 54.1 mph. No lift lines.

Great trees and fresh snow off Peak 10 at Breckenridge

Thursday at Keystone: We were originally planning to head back to Vail today, but decided to hit Keystone so we wouldn’t get stuck at Vail if they closed the pass. Keystone was perfect - another day with a nice amount of fresh powder and snow falling all day. We were getting free refills the whole time we rode. We spent the day in the trees in the Outback and burning calories skating the cat track back to the lift. We rode 20,922 vertical feet, resulting in 22.3 miles skied. Top speed: 50.4 mph. No lift lines.

Free refills all day at Keystone

Friday at Keystone: 19” of snow fell in 24 hours. I-70 from Denver was open long enough to get the resorts packed. Although the powder was awesome, the lines were not. I was only able to make 4 runs in 2 hours due to the lines, though they weren’t nearly as bad as people were reporting at Vail (1-2 hour lines at several lifts). The deep snow paired with wind gusts up to 60 mph resulted in a lot of terrain being closed for avalanche mitigation. Lifts were running slower than usual due to wind and gondolas were not running. I rode only 7,618 vertical feet (7 miles skied) before I called it quits - the lines and increasing crowds and winds weren’t worth the limited terrain that was open. Top speed: 38 mph.

19" of fresh snow at Keystone
                          The growing line at Keystone

Close out: I-70 back to Denver was closed Friday, so everyone who was able to make it up was stuck there. Emergency shelters were opened and people probably spent way too much on any remaining hotel rooms in the area. Saturday morning we headed back to Denver and there were steady cars trying to get up the mountain almost the entire way.

Overall, it was another awesome event. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions. With the exception of the last day, the resorts weren’t at all busy.

Absolutely! It might take me a bit to crank through all the footage, but I'll be sure to post the videos here once they're done
