  • Shredfest 2020- Preliminary Details

Hi Everyone , Season pass sales are now starting for the 2020 Season for Ikon and Epic passes and I wanted to give everyone a heads up about next season's Shredfest 2020 resort line up. Local Tahoe skiboarders, myself , Wjeong, and Sempai all get Epic passes rather then the Ikon pass and with the ever increasing costs of daily lift tickets at Squaw and Alpine we are dropping Squaw and Alpine from the Shredfest lineup and making Shredfest an all Epic Pass event . Many of the attendees of Shredfest also have Epic passes and we can usually hook folks up with discounted buddy pass tickets for those without passes. The planned line up for Shredfest 2020 is pre shredfest at Sugar Bowl . Sugarbowl is a member of one of a number of independent resorts not on Epic or Ikon that form the Powder Alliance .
    https://www.powderalliance.com/partner-resorts/
If you have a season pass at one of these areas you can get a half price ticket for the Sunday we will be there.. Also Sugarbowl often has significant discounts available on Liftopia . Shredfest proper will be Northstar on Monday , drive down to South Tahoe for Heavenly on Tuesday and then back at Northstar on Wednesday. Those who have Ikon passes and want to go to Squaw or Alpine in Tahoe can add on days either before or after Shredfest or skip the Sugarbowl day and go to Squaw or Alpine instead.
Heavenly and Northstar are wonderful resorts with a wide variety of terrain for all abilities.
Hope to see everyone next year !

    Shredfest 2020- Preliminary Details

Well that’s a big bummer , as I only get the IKon pass. As the iKon works at all the westfest resorts .
I was looking forward to not having to buy 2 again this year.

One option being still discussed is dropping the Sugarbowl preshredfest day and adding Alpine instead.

Understand Tom's disappointment... however I'm good with the Epic resorts. After the great time I had at my first Shredfest, I'm sure I'll make it work whichever resorts are chosen. I only choose Epic because my home mtn is Epic, which I think is the same reason Tom chooses Ikon for his home mtn.

Thanks for putting the preliminary details out, Jack. I don't want THIS season to end, but that pesky job thing may get in the way!

Well the thing is that your traveling to both sides of the e mountain and not sticking to north or south !

We all enjoy skiing with others and I’ve only been to 2 Shredfests and have no say, but to change and make that extra travel don’t quite make sense to me.
The fest will still have people going. Maybe more east coasters that have the epic pass? Or maybe iKon has a few of them purchasing that ?
The Westfest has 4 days all of them are iKon passes so I don’t have to buy 2 passes to make it work for me

Are you calling my mountain a 4 ½ hour 1 way drive as a home mountain?
I bought the epic pass last year because it was gonna be in South Tahoe, and I figured that Colorado would be a good trip too. Not to sure I can do that every year though..
If thats the way the cards play out this year , then so be it. I’ll be at least at 1 meetup.

LOL, yes Tom. I figured Mammoth would be considered your home mountain. Bear mtn and snow summit are crap compared to proper resorts like Mammoth. I'm in San Diego and I consider my home mountain in another state!

Allbeit, yes, Westfest is mostly Ikon, but Skiboard Connection is all Epic. No matter what there's going to be a choice. I think it's just how the cards are playing out. It's a commentary on how winter sports is getting pretty divisive. (EPIC vs. Ikon) I'm with you, I'll be attending at least one meetup, but I'm glad we're discussing now while passes are starting to go on sale.

With the Shredfest just coming from the ones we’re gonna return to and on opposite side of the lake seems to be a change from what they have been doing . I will head up to Tahoe during that time but I will most likely ski what I have equity in

I agree that the issue with organizing meet ups is that lift ticket prices are hitting the stratosphere and the ski world is being divided up into two major camps . There is a critical mass of us in the Tahoe area that have buddy passes that can offer those skiing at the Epic resorts discounted tickets. There are not enough of us with Ikon passes with Squaw and Alpine where lift ticket prices are sky rocketing. Wendell and I and others in the Tahoe area buy Epic passes because there are three different resorts on different parts of the lake with better snowmaking then Squaw and Alpine and those are the passes we buy. Organizing these meetups is a lot of work and Wendell and I are the point people now for the Tahoe meetup . We would be most happy to just organize a South Tahoe Epic pass Shredfest every other year and let someone else organize an Ikon only event at Squaw and Alpine and maybe even include Mammoth. This could even be done for next season if anyone else wants to take up the reins . If there would be such an event then probably Liz and I would attend but I would have to buy Mountain Collective passes right now before they sell out to make it financially worthwhile . The pass issue and cost issue is the real reason I am bringing this up right now when the passes go on sale . By the way Epic has also started a program of 100 dollar lift tickets for all their resorts bought ahead of the season which can be used at any resort but then goes off sale after the season starts.
With lift ticket prices approaching 200 dollars at the big resorts this can be a deal for those who don't want to buy full passes.
If some one wants to attend both Ikon and Epic resort meetups . that is around 650 to 690 for each base pass or over 1300 dollars for both passes, quite a huge cost and all of us who have to buy passes anyways at our local resorts. want a meet up where we are not going to have to shell out additional funds. I completely understand Tom's frustration but I think that is how the costs are really driving things.

Also shout out to organizers of the Skiboard Connection and Westfest meetups . It would be great if you should share any changes to resort line ups for next season so those of us in the market for passes can make decisions as to what to buy !

Hey Jack, curious as to why Kirkwood isn't included. That's still Epic, right?

It’s not really a frustration on my part, it’s more of me liking attending these events. Last year I bought both passes because I wanted to try out Colorado event, as we know that was all epic. 5 days with the Tahoe local pass and the 3 days in Tahoe made it a easy decision and overall a cost savings for me.
Just it cost 1,000 to get to Colorado and stay at a hotel there too. It was a expensive year for skiing for me in the end.
So this year the plan for me is/ was to attend the iKon events and next year would be the epic year , as trends were going. Not expecting the change at Shredfest, hence my speaking out.
It’s your event and you should do as you see fit , I’m just 1 person that attends.

Courtney , good question . Traditionally Shredfest has alternated between North and South Tahoe . If Shredfest is based in North Tahoe it is too far to drive to Kirkwood from there . Perhaps now that we are making the event an all Epic Pass event we should base the Fest every year in South Tahoe which is in between Northstar and Kirkwood. We may even decide to do this for next season . That way those with Epic passes could experience all of the Tahoe Epic resorts . Shredfest line up would be Day 1 Heavenly , Day 2 Northstar and Day 3 Kirkwood , and if there is bad weather and road closures etc , we could just stay put in South Lake Tahoe and ski Heavenly on bad weather days . Pre shredfest would still be Sierra at Tahoe which has the best tree skiing in Lake Tahoe and has nice discounted lift tickets on Liftopia and is 30 miles from South Lake . Also South Lake Tahoe has more of a range of accomodations with much more inexpensive options then North Tahoe . Let me think about it some more but it may make sense to base the 2020 Shredfest in South Lake Tahoe again . I was just at Kirkwood today and the riding was just fabulous especially the hike to terrain . It certainly has a different vibe , more wild and remote feeling then Heavenly or Northstar. Unfortunately we were not able to get there this Shredfest because of road closure from too much snow.

Annual Epic Pass Shredfest in South Lake Tahoe

After a lot of input from other annual Shredfest Attendees we have decided to make Shredfest an annual event based in South Lake Tahoe rather than alternating between North and South Tahoe starting for the next Shredfest in 2020 . Pre shredfest will be at Sierra at Tahoe which is an independent resort that is part of the Powder Alliance . Sierra at Tahoe has excellent tree skiing and located about 18 miles from South Lake Tahoe . and about a 1/2 hour drive , lift tickets are still reasonable compared to the big resorts and often there are some discounted tickets on Liftopia . Shredfest proper will be an all Epic pass event , Day 1 at Heavenly which is right in South Lake Tahoe . Day 2 will be at Northstar about 40 miles away and an hour or so drive from South Tahoe , Day 3 will be at Kirkwood 34 miles away about a 50 minute drive from South Lake Tahoe . All resorts are covered by the Epic pass . New this year is an Epic Day pass product , which allows those not buying the complete Epic pass product to buy a multiday discounted lift ticket good at any Epic resort . These passes must be bought prior to the season and will not be available after the season starts . For example a three day Epic day pass can be bought for 300 dollars or a 100 dollars per day and can be used at any Epic resort on a non holiday day . So folks not 100% sure they wanted to attend Shredfest could still use their Epic Day pass at multiple other Epic resorts including Park City , Vail , Beaver creek etc. Also those of us with Epic Season Passes have mulitple buddy passes loaded on our passes which we can use to give riders a discount who to do not have pre bought tickets. These will allow tickets around 100 dollars for Northstar and Heavenly and around 90 dollars for Kirkwood, all signifcant discounts from the 160 to 170 dollar ticket window prices during the season . South Lake Tahoe has multiple accomodation choices including bargain basement accomodations and cheap rooms at the local Casino hotels as well as condo and house rentals . There is also a lot to do in South Lake Tahoe for non skiing guests or spouses such as gambling , big name entertainment , movie theater , shopping , snowmobile rides , and sight seeing. South Tahoe is a one hour drive from the Reno Airport or about a 2 hour drive from Sacramento Airport .
Those folks who have Ikon passes can also substitute Squaw and Alpine on their own for any of the dates or go to those resorts before and after Shredfest . In good weather with the road on the West side of the lake open (it tends to close in snowy weather) the drive is 40 miles away and about an hour or so drive.
Making this an all Epic pass event also allows folks to stay put in South Lake Tahoe and ski at Heavenly if there are road closures or bad driving conditions to the other resorts which did happen this Shredfest.
I would appreciate if one of those folks on the Facebook skiboard connection site could post this information as well .

The dates for Shredfest 2020 have been finalized. After discussion with a number of regular Shredfest attendees. the dates has been moved forward one day to allow all days including pre shredfest day to fall on the weekday and avoid weekend crowds. This also allows cheaper discounted lift tickets at Sierra at Tahoe .
Shredfest 2020 will be in South Lake Tahoe
Monday February 24 Preshredfest day at Sierra at Tahoe
Tuesday February 25 Shredfest Day 1 at Heavenly
Wednesday February 26th Shredfest Day 2 at Northstar
Thursday February 27th Shredfest Day 3 at Kirkwood.

Hope to see everyone next season ! Have a wonderful rest of the skiboard season this year. Out West some of our ski areas have announced they will be open through July 7th because of massive snow year . Also best wishes for a great summer !
