  • Snowshoes for Backcountry Skiboarding

Here are a couple of reviews and discussion of using snowshoes for backcountry skiboarding. Snowshoes are a simple method of getting into backcountry skiboarding . Skiboards are carried on the pack on the way up while wearing snowshoes and then poles and snowshoes go on the pack while riding down on skiboards. I like the MSR Denali Snowshoe which has nice crampons for grip and especially like the MSR Denali Ascent that has a heel lift.

In both of these reviews and reports I am climbing with snowshoes and carrying my KTP's which are very nice backcountry skiboards.

Overall , I much prefer touring with the Backcountry Touring Kit over using snowshoes. It is really nice to get the monkey off the back and not be carrying extra weight up and down the mountain and it is very efficient to use the skiboard as both an uphill as well as a downhill tool . The use of snowshoes however does mate really well with easily packable skiboards for backcountry travel and is really a very viable alternative to using a touring binding on a skiboard.

yes , i agree... IMHO Snowshoes perform better as a climbing tool in firmer snow , or a small amount of fresh snow over a firm surface ..

here are some pros and cons of snowshoes vs touring bindings on skiboards

      Snowshoes.......
      * you can usually take a more direct route climbing up a hill ( if the snow is not too deep )
      * offer easier means of crossing obstacles like fallen trees, dirt , patches of rocks mixed dirt and snow . etc.
      * no learning curve to use , takes a bit of practice to get proficient using skins and touring bindings.

Large Surface area skiboards with touring bindings and skins and ski crampons if needed.....

      * offer ease traversing slopes, snowshoes can be difficult to use traversing , especially on firm snow .
      * offer greater speed on flat surfaces or rolling gentle slopes,
      * with "climbing skins" attached make climbing slopes less effort , gliding forward with each step rather than picking up snowshoe and stepping down
      * make "breaking trail" less of an effort,
      * allows you to use trails already broken by skiers and splitboarders . It is very poor backcountry etiquette to snowshoe up skier packed trails .
      * no need to carry extra gear on your back up and down the hill .

IMHO with the development of a robust sturdy backcountry touring kit for skiboards that supports ski crampons and provides a way to restrict torque of the front of the free heel boot for difficult climbing on firm snow , the advantages of the backcountry touring kit far outweighs any advantages of snowshoes and my snowshoes are gathering dust . I use the backcountry touring kit on my Condors in preference to my snowshoes in all conditions whether deep winter snow or firm spring snow .

Do you know where I could get snowshoes in the uk, can't seem to find them anywhere.
Also, would my line jedis have enough float for now? I'm 5' 2" 100lbs and the dimensions of the jedis are 130mm tip 101 mm waist and 130mm tail.

Yes I really consider them pretty much an essential . if you are walking on flat only maybe not but for any kind of serious climbing , they aid with balance , conserve energy and are necessary for safety , think of it as having 4 wheel drive for off terrrain work ..

                here is some information
                http://www.livestrong.com/article/11...shoeing-poles/

I like 3 section collapsilbe trekking poles with snow baskets . this allows me to stow the poles reduced the pack for descent .

this is the one I use
